St.
Columbkilles advanced past the first round of this competition for the first
time in 3 years with a great win over Christopher’s. A couple of newcomers to the team helped the cause. Both Galwaymen, Michael Harty from Oranmore
and Dermot Hynes from Corofin made a positive impact on the team. From wing forward Harty scored 4 points from
play, while Hynes added stability to the half back line. Goals from Damien Lee and Anthony Walsh
early on provided a cushion. Dayo
fisted into the back of the net while Anthony finished with a placed shot into
the top corner. The back line kept Christopher’s
to one point in the first half, and shortly before half time Brian Pederesci
split the posts with a crisply hit free kick.
St. Cols led by 2-4 to 0-1 at the half.
In the second half Christopher’s had the back line under pressure as
their midfield got the upper hand, but could only manage 3 points. Colin Murphy made a couple of good saves to
prevent a goal, and keep some shouting distance between the teams. Shortly before the final whistle Conor
Hannick pointed from an almost impossible angle. When asked whether he meant it he replied in his dry Kilalla
accent, “I was actually trying to put it wide.” Next week we face the Connemara Gaels in the quarter-final.
