The
result reflects the work that needs to be done to bridge the gap between the
level we are playing at now and where we need to be if we aspire to be
competitive at senior level in the future.
There were 3 newcomers who started on Sunday, and all look like they
will be worthy contributors this year.
Colm Brady from Louth, and Eric Light and Conor McAnteer from Dublin. In fact, Eric had our first score with a
nice point from play.
Things
were close enough for the first quarter of the game, however, the Gaels made a
run where they pulled ahead in the 10 minutes before half time. Kieran Cox caused a lot of damage with his
forward runs from mid-field to create the extra man, and executing with scores
when his colleagues found him with the ball.
Mike Harty got on the scoreboard for St. Cols, and Colm Brady had a run
and a blast at goal that came off the underside of the crossbar. The Gaels had a couple of excellent goal
chances themselves, however, Colin Murphy made two magnificent saves to keep us
in it.
The
second half was a bit of a disappointment from our viewpoint as the Gaels
continued to add to their lead and 2 goals ended the game as a contest. John Cunningham and Donnacha Lee worked hard
in midfield, and the forwards tried to make the most of their chances. Conor Donovan and Dayo Lee had good chances
at goal but narrowly missed. In spite
of the score things look bright for this years’ intermediate championship with
the addition of 5 players to the intermediate panel and possibly a couple more
before the deadline.
