Intermediate Football

St. Columbkilles 0-10 Christophers 0-8

The Intermediate championship door was kept open for St. Columbkilles as they dug out a hard fought game against Christophers on Saturday.  Christophers took an early two point lead, but St. Columbkilles took a five points to three lead into half time.  The St. Cols back line, including Salthill men Rory McTiernan and Greg Begley, picked it up a notch or two and Paul Cronin, Mick Lyons, and Paddy McKenna accounted for scores for the ‘killes.  Jim Howard and Danny Kenneally won a plethora of ball in the middle of the field, but Christophers could not turn the possession into scores.  However, Willie Lombard and Pat Dwyer hit the mark for Christopher’s.

The Game was always close in the second half with never more than a goal separating the sides.  Christopher’s were hit a blow as Mark O’Sullivan retired due to an ankle injury.  St. Cols picked off scores, one a great effort from Begley who stole upfield from wing back, but Christopher’s always hung around and Dwyer looked dangerous at times.  James Young and John Fitzpatrick each pointed as they sallied from their own half back line.  With two points in it and time almost up Dwyer won the ball on the edge of the ‘killes square and his shot fizzed over the crossbar much to the relief of the St. Cols supporters and management.  A win for the ‘killes and it’s anybody’s championship again.
