Galway 1-11 St. Columbkilles 0-10
On Saturday the Galway
Intermediate footballers had a good win over St. Columbkilles
in this clash of Brighton rival clubs. The Galwaymen
played some good football to secure the win while the St. Cols side struggled
to get any flow to their play. The Killes led early on but once Galway
leveled the scores at four points apiece 20 minutes into the first half the Killes struggled to catch up.
With new signings Ryan
Bradley and Jonathan Daniels the Killes opened
brightly and had four points over the bar.
Galway clawed their way back into the game and some well delivered ball
into their corner forwards Galway leveled the
scores. It was tit for tat up to the
half time whistle and Galway held a seven
points to six slender advantage at the half. St. Columbkilles
suffered a loss as corner back Damien Lee had to leave the field of play due to
a knee injury.
The first 10 minutes of the
second was where the Galwaymen put the game away and
stretched their lead to seven points.
Two quick points from Peter Atkinson followed by a goal put Galway in the drivers seat. JJ Doyle in the middle of the field stood out
not only for his distinctive haircut, but for winning the ball. Peter Nolan was another stand out for Galway
as his sharpness to the ball and willingness to track back into defence helped Galway’s
cause. St. Columbkilles
did peg the lead back to three points and Colm Morris almost leveled the scores
with a goal, but Pat O’Connell was sharp to make the save.
Galway and Mayo play next week to decide who will make
automatic qualification to the final, while the following week St. Columbkilles and Christopher’s meet to decide who will meet
