Mayo 0-12 St. Columbkilles 0-6

May 29th, 2005

Intermediate hopefuls Mayo and St. Columbkilles met in the opening game of the day.  There was some doubt in the winter months whether these clubs would field at all this season, but field they did and it was Mayo, whose first half performance put too much daylight between the sides, who took the points.

Mayo took the game to the ‘Killes from the start and had their opponents on the ropes for much of the 30 minutes.  It was a case of damage limitation and backs to the wall for St. Cols as Mayo dominated the middle of the field and several runs down the middle from Kevin Comer and Michael McGreal ended up in scores for the Mayomen.  St. Cols had keeper Colin Murphy to thank for 3 tremendous saves, all from close range shots, to keep it respectable at half time.  Paddy Quigley pointed several fees for Mayo and Paul Wilson pointed from play, while for the Killes, Conor Donovan and Paddy McKenna pointed to make it a seven points to two Mayo lead at the half.

In the second the Killes put up a much better fight.  Donnacha Lee came into the middle of the field and challenged well, winning some good ball.  With the pressure off the back line the Brighton side set about putting a few scores on the board.  Conor Donovan scored two nice points from play and McKenna’s place kicking was excellent.  However, Mayo did enough to maintain their lead as Kevin Walsh, Comer, and Quigley pointed for the Mayomen.  In the end it was a good win for Mayo to get them on the board with championship points.
