St. Columbkille’s 1-9 Galway 0-9
St. Columbkille’s and Galway played an exciting 60 minutes of football, and it
was one of those games that could definitely be characterized as a game of two
halves. St. Cols dominated the first 30
and Galway hardly got a look in. However, in the second Galway
launched a massive comeback effort that fell just short. In fact, at the tail end of the first half
Galway had a golden goal chance that was blasted four feet wide, had that gone
in the game would have had a totally different look about it.
Once again, from the middle
of the field forward St. Columbkilles looked
unstoppable. John March worked
tirelessly in the middle of the field, and was ably assisted by John
Cunningham. Eoghan Keating was the main
producer in terms of scores, but the wing forwards, Dermot O’Connor and Odhran
McCann were also in flying form. Once
Keating netted in the 20th minute it looked like curtains for Galway as they trailed by five points at that stage. Galway
managed a paltry 2 points in the first, and at half time trailed by a score of
1-7 to 0-2.
The second half was an
entirely different story. Galway mounted an early comeback that lasted for most of
the half. Within five minutes they had
pulled back three points, and St. Columbkille’s looked a little stunned. With Galway
well on the comeback trail St. Cols introduced several subs. James Kinsella, Paddy McKenna, Kevin Ward,
Eric Miller, and XXX were brought on midway through the half and helped to
settle the ship. Galway
managed to get within two points, but St. Cols did restore the gap to three for
the last few minutes. St. Columbkille’s
are now 2 from three and a win against Christopher’s
the following week put them in with at least a semi-final spot.
